Plot 7 Allotment Update 08.09.2013

Well, we spent about 5 hours at the plot today, for the first time in a while.

Having been in work from 7 this morning til 11 it was nice to get there and get some fresh air and exercise!

I went for a short while late on Saturday evening, just to collect some goodies.  Most of the tomatoes are finished now.

Picked more chilli’s and sweet peppers today but didn’t get a photo.  The curry will be amazing though!!!!

The main objective today was to cover the area under the apple tree’s that has been weeded.  We want to reduce the amount of time spent weeding and more time enjoying what we are growing.

Therefore, most of the plot is to covered with weed control fabric and we will, where necessary, plant through the fabric or cut it for beds etc.

We plan to plant dwarf fruit tree’s in front of the apple tree’s, once they’ve been pruned, and have our own mini orchard!!

The blackberry bushes are growing nicely up the pergola and are being trained accordingly.

We have also been given a section of a poly tunnel frame from a plot neighbour.

It will be re-netted and we will us this to protect the fruit tree’s and fruit canes / bushes until they are established.

We are also busy planning what and where we will plant next year.  Need to change a few things around, relocate a greenhouse and stagger our growing season to ensure that we get our veg and salad items over a longer period.

Who knows, might even get a poly tunnel!!!  That is another story for another blog for another time……still working on the Wife for that one!!!!!

This is the plot that is next door to ours.  It is now ours!!  The woman who had it is moving to another plot and we have been given it!!

I currently already has an apple tree, gooseberry bush, red currant bush, pear tree and strawberries!

The plot has just been turned but needs lots of work to get it ready for winter planting and for next years crops.

We have no idea what to plant yet but we have learnt so much through mistakes made on the other half that I am sure we will plan it better to maximise the crops.

I am so looking forward to this challenge.

Lots more hard work but I know from what we’ve achieved already, it will be great fun!

Watch this space….
