Plot 7 Allotment Update 08.09.2013

Well, we spent about 5 hours at the plot today, for the first time in a while.

Having been in work from 7 this morning til 11 it was nice to get there and get some fresh air and exercise!

I went for a short while late on Saturday evening, just to collect some goodies.  Most of the tomatoes are finished now.

Picked more chilli’s and sweet peppers today but didn’t get a photo.  The curry will be amazing though!!!!

The main objective today was to cover the area under the apple tree’s that has been weeded.  We want to reduce the amount of time spent weeding and more time enjoying what we are growing.

Therefore, most of the plot is to covered with weed control fabric and we will, where necessary, plant through the fabric or cut it for beds etc.

We plan to plant dwarf fruit tree’s in front of the apple tree’s, once they’ve been pruned, and have our own mini orchard!!

The blackberry bushes are growing nicely up the pergola and are being trained accordingly.

We have also been given a section of a poly tunnel frame from a plot neighbour.

It will be re-netted and we will us this to protect the fruit tree’s and fruit canes / bushes until they are established.

We are also busy planning what and where we will plant next year.  Need to change a few things around, relocate a greenhouse and stagger our growing season to ensure that we get our veg and salad items over a longer period.

Who knows, might even get a poly tunnel!!!  That is another story for another blog for another time……still working on the Wife for that one!!!!!

Fruit Pergola and more…Plot 7 Allotment Update 29/30.06.2013

Had a very productive and industrious weekend at the plot.

Firstly I netted the greenhouse door so that we could have it open but no birds could fly in.

Our friend Malcolm has been helping us whilst he has some spare time and this weekend we built a fruit pergola.

we will grow blackcurrants up and over the construction and it will also be the start of the walk way through the apple tree’s to the seats that we plan to put in so that we can enjoy the fruits (get it?) of our labours.

All of the wood comes from my work so the outlay is nil.  all of the wood has been stained to preserve it for as long as possible.

Once completed we planted the two blackcurrant bushes and in the fulness of time, our pergola will be covered with flowers and fruit.

We also harvested our first Japanese over wintering onion.  Its not the size that counts….

Everything in the greenhouse is growing and maturing at a vast rate.  We have 10 tomato plants in the soil and another 9 in pots!  The chilli’s and peppers are doing well too.

All the beds are looking good too.  We now have planted: potatoes; onions; over wintering onions; red cabbage; spring cabbage; cauliflowers; leeks;parsnips; garlic; corn, sprouts and turnips!!!

I also found these little buggers munching on the red cabbage!!

Next week we start to construct our second greenhouse.  This one is 6 x 4 and has been donated by my sister in law.

We have prepared the ground and the cucumbers will be planted in there.

More onions will be harvested next week I think and they will be bigger that our first one harvested on Saturday!

Keep watching for more updates.  All comments and advise are always welcome….

Plot 7 Update 1.6.2013

Spent the day at the plot just tidying up, weed and water all the pots in the greenhouse.

I was delightfully surprised to find 5 Moneymaker tomato seedlings!  Won’t get anything off them I guess but still great to see them.

We have tomatoes growing on the plants in the greenhouse and also some chilli’s growing.

Chilli!!!!

I then started to weed the beds and pulled out so much horse tail.  The stuff just never dies!

We then started to weed the new half of our plot and I put the metal mesh onto the wooden fence at the bottom.

I hope the above panorama photo shows the progress we are making on the new half.  Still plenty to do though!!
